HBO Max hampered in its development in Europe

HBO Max is hampered in its development in Europe by the partnerships and program supply agreements that have been made there and are still running, Write the Financial Times. This is particularly the case for three major territories, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy where HBO has an output deal with pay-TV group Sky which was renewed in 2019 and is in effect a priori until 2025. HBO Max will not launch into these territories while agreements are in place, and indicated WarnerMedia au Financial Times. According to the newspaper, following the appointment of Jason Kilar as CEO of WarnerMedia in May 2020, HBO reportedly explored renegotiations of its deal with Sky but did not pursue. The fact that HBO Max can have a global presence is a crucial point in Jason Kilar's strategy, whose only regret when he ran Hulu (of 2009 at 2013), is for not launching the streaming service internationally, thus preventing it from becoming a competitor to the size of Netflix, indicates the Financial Times.

WarnerMedia announced last month that HBO Max would launch in Europe later this year, but only mentioned Spain as a country, Portugal and the Nordic countries. Remember that in France, another major territory in Europe, HBO also has an ongoing partnership, with Orange and OCS which was renewed in 2017, and would be in effect until the end 2022. At the same time, Sky (groupe Comcast) and Orange are both operators and are therefore also potential partners for HBO Max as distributors.
