Better profitability for pay channels in 2019

According to the latest CSA study, revenues from pay-per-view cable and satellite channels were down in 2019, of 2% at 2.793,7 M€, but their cumulative operating income becomes positive again at 15,2 M€.

The Canal+ channel and its variations (Canal+ Cinema, Canal+ Sport, Canal+ Family, Channel+ Series, Canal+ Shifted), which weighs for 54% of the total turnover of 77 chains studied by the CSA, is against the current, its income resuming a small increase in 2019 (of 1 % at 1.502 M€) but its result being for the first time slightly in deficit (-1M€).  Hors Canal+, three channels concentrate a significant share of revenues : BeIN Sports, OCS and Cine +, which between them generate almost half of the total turnover of the other pay channels, or 608,8 M€ in 2019

the turnover of the Canal+ channels has been in regular decline since 2013 (of – 20 % in total), while at the same time BeIN Sports was gaining momentum, underlines the CSA, conversely, the sports channel recorded a drop in – 17 %  in 2019. The other channels, for their part, suffered a severe drop in -42% from 2011, the main reason being the decline in their number, with the closure of about twenty of them since 2015, although there are a few newcomers.

The turnover is made up of 85% royalties paid by distributors, more or less stable in recent years, with a decrease of 4% by BeIN Sports in 2019, while advertising, who had retreated well between 2012 et 2017, no longer represents 6% revenue but is stable.

When the trend reversal concerning the profitability of chains, it is due to the achievement of the balance of Eurosport in 2019, and the decrease in the deficits of BeIN Sports and OCS, channels that have made the total fall into the red in recent years. In 2019, 31 companies studied on 39 present an operating result at equilibrium and ten companies have a result higher than 5 M€.

M6 becomes the second pay channel publisher group in terms of number of channels (12 in 2019) after the acquisition in September 2019 of the 6 Lagardère group channels (dont Gulli, Canal J, MCM), its turnover jumping from 42 %.

The CSA study is carried out on the basis of financial data extracted from the balance sheets and profit and loss accounts 31 december 2019 of 77 pay channels (including Canal+ channels) edited by 39 companies.
