Once is not custom, it's a Netflix animated film, The Sea Beast (The Sea Monster), first in programming Family Summer, who came at the top of the top 10 English-language films from the platform the week of 4 July, in the top of 92 pays. During his first weekend, this spectacular family film has in fact accumulated nearly 34 million hours viewed.
A very good score, even if far from the level of exceptional scores of the platform's blockbusters, equivalent to that for example of a Spiderhead lately, and surpassing other fiction film launches. (The time of year should also be taken into consideration., audiences may be less in front of their screens in the summer).
Among the competition which benefits from its own studios, animated films can be an important loss leader, they also help to build loyalty among family audiences. Disney+ thus achieved its big successes in the United States with its animated films, according to the Nielsen indicator. On Netflix, last year, without achieving such scores, animated films had already made up a significant part of the top 10 weekly platform audiences all summer. Mid-July, a week equivalent to that of The Sea Beast of this year, Troll Hunters ranked first for its launch with 16M hours viewed, while during the end of year holidays, Back to the Outback had started in the lead at 39M hours viewed in December and remained for several weeks in the top English-language films.
Netflix therefore decided this summer to work harder, by setting up the programming Family Summer : an original film or animated series each week.
CGI film featuring sea monsters, The Sea Beast was directed by Chris William, familiar with the Disney universe having worked there for around twenty years. In particular, he carried out Big Hero 6, Oscar winner in 2015, and co-directed Moana. The Sea Beast benefited from a limited theatrical release of a few weeks in certain countries including the United States.
This is good news for animation, at a time when Netflix is closely monitoring its spending, and while part of the layoff plan concerned collaborators in the field of animation and certain series in development were canceled, note certain foreign newspapers. Other signals sent by Netflix to the outside world, its ambition in the genre is intended to be intact, waiting for other ambitious projects like the Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro, images of which were presented during the Annecy festival showcase, on the occasion of which new animation projects in Europe were also announced, including films.
A true crime documentary in second place
During the week of 4 July, Also noteworthy is the performance of a feature-length documentary, The Girl in The Pictures, in the vein True crime, which comes in second position with 28 million hours viewed during its first weekend, in the top of 57 pays. Netflix has already had success with a documentary film this year, The Tinder Swindler (The Tinder scammer), who made him look at 46 million hours during its first weekend.
